What "Unbanked" Really Means in 2026

The word unbanked was invented to describe a problem. In practice, it describes a category of people that the financial system has decided to measure by what they lack, rather than by what they have. It is a peculiar way to think about 1.4 billion people.

What they actually have

Most people counted as unbanked own a smartphone. Most have a mobile money account. Many receive wages, pay rent, send money to family, and save regularly, all without ever interacting with a bank. In sub-Saharan Africa, mobile money accounts outnumber bank accounts by a factor of three. In Madagascar, Orange Money and MVola move more value per day than most local bank branches.

So the question is not how to give these people access to finance. The question is why the finance they already use cannot do everything they need it to do.

The real gap

Mobile money solved the problem of moving small amounts of local currency between people who know each other. It did not solve the problem of holding value that does not erode. It did not solve the problem of receiving money from someone in Paris or New York without losing 10 percent of it to a transfer service. It did not solve the problem of earning on idle savings.

These are not niche problems. They are the core problems of anyone trying to build financial stability in a high-inflation, high-remittance economy. The absence of a bank account is not what causes them. A bank account would not fix most of them either.

The framing that changes everything

When you stop thinking about the unbanked as people who need to be integrated into existing financial infrastructure, and start thinking about them as people who have already built their own, the product question changes entirely.

The right question is not: how do we get them into the banking system? It is: how do we connect the infrastructure they have (mobile money, local agents, community savings circles) to the infrastructure that handles global value (stablecoins, programmable money, borderless transfers)?

That connection, between local and global rails, is where the next decade of financial innovation will happen. And it will not be built by banks.
